Children's Day: Too Low Birth Rate

Children's day is the day to show that children are important to the country. Good children would grow up to be good citizens—human resources.

In Thailand, Children's day is set on the second Saturday of January. Many organisations will open their own offices for children. Children will have fun and get inspirations of many careers, so they can choose their future wisely.

2014 Children's day slogan is "Being grateful, responsible, well-behaved, and discipline will develop Thailand strongly." given by PM Yingluck.

Too low birth rate in Thailand

According to the World Bank, Thailand's birth rate is ranked second lowest in ASEAN, preceded only by Singapore. Though Thailand's birth rate is similar to developed countries which are high income countries, Thailand is an upper-middle income country. Developing countries, including low and middle income countries, need a lot of workers in various economy sections.

Causes of low birth rate in Thailand

Although we've seen many news about pregnancy in teens, family planning in Thailand is very effective. Many couples decide to have only one child. Many of them decide to have no child or have one child when their economic statuses are secure. One child per family is lower than replacement rate, 2 children per family.

Effects of low birth rate in developing countries

Thailand is a developing country which its economy relies on manufacturing sector. According to the World Bank, Thailand will reach the highest number of workers in next few years. Then, the number of workers will decrease because there will be a few teenagers and children. In contrast, the number of old people will increase rapidly. That would be responsibility of the Government to take care of them with tax that less levy because of the decrease of workers.
